Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, post links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.. Facebook's built-in chat feature is one of the site's many online tools used to forge new online friendships, but the chat box isn't as intuitive as other portions of the Facebook dashboard. Chat options are tucked away near the bottom of the screen, but even beginning Facebook users can change chat settings with ease once they know where to click.Instructions
.Log in to your Facebook account at Facebook.com.
.Click on the gray chat bar in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. The chat box expands, displaying a list of all your friends currently available for chatting. A green dot next to a person's name indicates she is actively using Facebook, while a gray crescent moon icon means he is online but not active.
.Click on the "Options" button at the top of the expanded chat window. The "Options" button features a gear-shaped icon.
.Click on the desired settings underneath the "Options" heading to toggle the settings. If the setting has a check mark next to it, then that option is activated. If there is no check mark, then the setting is disabled. From the "Options" menu, you can turn on and off settings such as display sounds, online status, and how your friends appear in the window. Changes take effect immediately, and your preferences are saved even if you log in and out of your account.
