Google Removing Videos From Google Video To Provide Search Services Only

Google is removing all the videos on Google Video and making it even more search focused rather than host videos. The upload feature has been disabled back in January, 2009 and now with this announcement, they will disable the playback of already uploaded videos too. The company has notified the same to users who are hosting videos using the Google Video. A mail has been sent out to users by Google carrying the notification that said,

“Dear Google Video User,

Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we're removing the remaining hosted content. We've always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.

On April 29, 2011, videos that have been uploaded to Google Video will no longer be available for playback. We've added a Download button to the video status page, so you can download any video content you want to save. If you don't want to download your content, you don't need to do anything. (The Download feature will be disabled after May 13, 2011.)

We encourage you to move to your content to YouTube if you haven't done so already. YouTube offers many video hosting options including the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner. To learn more go here.

Here's how to download your videos:

Go to the Video Status page. To download a video to your computer, click the Download Video link located on the right side of each of your videos in the Actions column.

Once a video has been downloaded, 'Already Downloaded' will appear next to the Download Video link.

If you have many videos on Google Video, you may need to use the paging controls located on the bottom right of the page to access them all.

A Google post also informs the same. According to it, from April 29, 2011 users can no longer play the videos that have been uploaded to Google Video. The company has added a Download button to the Video Status page (in the “Actions” column, the button can be seen on the right side of each video). Clicking on it, you can download videos that you want to save. The download feature will also be disabled by the 13th of May, 2011. For numerous video download, Google recommends using the paging controls (found at the right bottom of the page).

The files will be downloaded in the FLV format which might require to install an FLV player to play. Google Video chiuderà il 29 Aprile

Tra qualche settimana Google Video chiuderà definitivamente. La notizia, già nell’aria da tempo e ampiamente prevedibile visto lo scarso successo del servizio, è stata confermata da Google, che ha annunciato la chiusura per il 29 aprile.

A dire il vero, negli ultimi tempi Google Video si era trasformato da portale divideosharing a semplice servizio di ricerca di filmati, tanto che già nel maggio 2009 Google aveva tolto la possibilità di caricare video agli utenti, ma lasciando che tutti i filmati caricati dal 25 gennaio 2005, giorno dell’apertura di Google Video, fossero comunque fruibili.

Adesso, tra qualche giorno, non sarà più così, tanto che gli iscritti che in passato avevano caricato qualche video, sono stati già contattati da Google per dare loro la possibilità di riprendersi il materiale inviato, in quanto dal 13 maggio, tutti i filmati del servizio salvati sui server di Mountain View saranno eliminati, senza alcuna possibilità di essere recuperati in seguito.

Google Video lascia quindi il posto a YouTube, servizio tra i più noti del Web e su cui Google ha deciso per ovvi motivi di puntare con decisione, con l’intenzione di cavalcare la tendenza che vede sempre più forti le sinergie tra piattaforme un tempo assai diverse come Internet e la TV, con l’una che invade il campo dell’altra e viceversa, in questo gioco che vede il Web puntare sempre più sui contenuti di tipo televisivo in senso pieno e la TV che cerca al tempo stesso di impossessarsi della flessibilità che ha da sempre contraddistinto il Web.

Un gioco che, evidentemente, non era più adatto a un servizio come Google Video.
